The Quest Continues

Found these today at a five day, town-wide, out-door antique show. The red and orange ones were new to The Closeum. Nice to find them 50 years after getting the original ones (dark green Lotus and blue BRM). Marked $8 each, but since I only selected three, he said how about $6 each (one free). Who would argue?19-D10 Lotus Racer "3" (orange w/ yellow stripe) (1965) 52-B3 BRM Racer "5" (blue) (1965) 52-B3 BRM Racer "5" (blue) (1965) 52-B3 BRM Racer "5" (red) (1965) Red models were released in Gift Set G4 Racetrack Set in 1966 and Gift Set G4 Race'n Rally Set in 1968 (Stannard). I thought the orange Lotus may have come with the King Size race transporter, but Stannard didn't mention it. Note left rear tire on far left BRM is smaller than the others.

Great to see those old formula one race cars that Matchbox offered in the regular wheels days. I was thinking the orange Lotus and red BRM came from a gift set. I know I have the orange one in my collection but bought it from someone years ago

If I'm not mistaken it was the G-4 Grand Prix racing set from like 1968, not sure about that, but I know there was an earlier Grand Prix set too, but it had different cars. Years ago I did have the opportunity to get most of the cars from that set that a guy I know had found while helping an elderly lady clean out the loft of her barn or something like that, so the lady told the guy he could have them, it was just some of the cars though not the set itself, so he sold the cars to me, the only models that were exclusive to it as I recall were those two racers, and two other cars that came with it were the VW 1600, and the Ford Cortina I think it was, regular issue colors, but they had special roof racks that snapped on them, making them exclusive in that way I guess. The set also came with a couple emergency models, BP wrecker, oh yeah, and I think it might have been the set that had the yellow Ford GT, but the guy didn't have that one in the bunch. I'll try and remember to post photos this weekend of those roof rack ones. Anyway Jeff, Great find, and that was a really nice deal the guy gave you!

Hey John and Doug - I have (since my original post) seen both the G4 gift sets on eBay. You are right about the contents. I think the one that came with the King Size transporter included the Denver fire pumper and the '64 Cadillac ambulance. I saw the beige Cortina with the yellow snap-on roof rack of some kind. The other G4 set - the one with the VW fastback had the Mercedes ambulance (and the Denver pumper). I like the yellow Ford GT too. Some super nice sets. Don't really remember seeing them back in the day. I only looked at the single models at $0.55 a pop. Yes, the guy was nice today. I remember talking to him for a long time last year (general bull session), but didn't buy anything. Real nice fellow. I like finding these things when the seller's main stock and trade is not necessarily toys (or Matchbox in particular). I knew the red and orange may be on the rare side, so I felt like a cat getting away with a gallon of cream. I'm gonna have to get one of those race transporters now. They are fairly common. Just never had enough cars to justify it. Maybe at York in November? Who Knows? |

Thanks Jeff, I see I was confusing the two sets, and forgive me for not noticing the part in your original post pointing out the two different sets. Hope you don't mind me posting a couple photos here that I had taken today showing the contents of each of those sets.....not that I have the actual sets to show, but do have most of the cars that made up each set............ 1966 Ractrack set, this set would have also included the R4 Roadway Layout shown there, though you'll have to just imagine one of those Ford GTs is the rarer yellow one that would have come with it. ![]() 1968 Race N Rallye set contents, this is the set my Lotus and BRMs would have come in, as I got them from the same place as the cars with the rallye roof racks.

Doug - wow - I take it those are yours. Don't mind at all you posting these!!! I need the race transporter, the yellow Ford GT (would settle for a restoration), and would like to find the Cortina and VW with those roof rack accessories (highly unlikely unless the whole set were to be found). Hats off to you and these cars! I somehow ended up with two green Lotus cars. The ones I got yesterday are in pretty decent shape - all things considered (a few chips, one incorrect tire, etc.). |

Yes - the #19 Lotus "3" body can be either orange or dark green, and both have the hood stripe. |

Doug, I see the Ford GT with the dark blue stripe has yellow wheels. Did these also have red wheels? Mine (w/ dark blue stripe) is like yours - with yellow wheels. |

I'm not sure about the red wheel version Jeff, never seen one before, but according to the value in my collectors guide it must be even rarer than the yellow paint scheme version, It appears to me that my dark blue one is a water slide decal, whereas the lighter blue one is a self adhesive label, I thought maybe that was the difference in colors, but not sure if that is always true. Missing a wheel on the dark one, but thought I had a beater somewhere I could swipe a wheel from, just don't know where I have it if I do. Yeah, those in the photos are all mine, but some of the models are shared between to two pics, like the racers and fire engine. My racing car transporter is nice except for the roof glass is cracked, I bought it that way at a show years ago for cheap, had to have one though, since I remembered having one as a kid. I bought that Roadway layout off ebay years back, but when I got it there was an interesting poster included in it, it has reference to it being part of the G4 racing set, so I guess this particular roadway was an actual part of an original set. |

Yeah, I picked up on that Roadway layout in that gift set. Cool and interesting. The Stannard guide does not mention the red wheels, but the color plate (same guide) shows one with red wheels. Go figure. Edit/Correction: The guide may indicate the red wheels by "RWh 7mm" Edit: Indeed - the abbreviation "RWh" = red plastic wheel hub ![]() Looks like you may also have the Denver fire pumper without the "Denver" on the doors. Looks like that was a variant too. I thought you were just missing the decal. I am not an expert on variants, and not sure I pay that much attention, but these just happened to catch my eye. Neat photo, I see two more of the Ford Gt's I hope to add one day, it's just finding and affording them is the only obstacle. I do have the one with the Denver decals also, but it is funny now that you mention it, I don't remember seeing it there in my Jammers case when I got this one out for pictures, hmmm, now I have to go look for it.
