The first time I have seen a new Beetle used as a derby car.

am I surprised by the old New Beetle barely getting a dent on the bumpers? heck NO! :P
I seen the 5mph crash tests on that & it barely made a dent!
took about 6-7 min on showing a dent

that bumper is made like the cars of the 50s were!

its the reason I loves VWs!

I'm guessing the strength comes from the shape, since it's made from the same plastic as any other car's bumper cover of the era was. ;)

Support your local demo derby.

Under the plastic is an aluminum or steel bumper. I'd agree with Funeral of the shape, as rounded as the new style bug is i think that helps a bunch. Stock curb weight is around 2700 pounds for the new Bugs and compared to the other compacts in the same heat they're likely lighter cars. I've seen PT Cruisers and modern Ford Focus Wagons do well in stock style compact classes. Our local modified compact classes are still dominated by built Pinto/Mustang IIs, AMC Spirit, Pacers, fox Mustangs and '94+ Stangs.

Two Beetles were raced in a figure 8 derby in Erin, Ontario about a month ago:

The video is here: Erin, 2017 but the heat with the Beetles starts at 9:54. The pink one ran again in a regular heat.

Thanks for sharing that. I will add the video to my playlist and give it a watch when I get some extra time.

Your welcome. :)

Another interesting car run in a derby may be the Chevrolet HHR. First I've seen anyway:

Seen here in Drayton, Ontario last August: Drayton, 2017. The video runs for 43 minutes but the HHR is seen starting at about 30 minutes into the video.

It survived four derbies (including a full-size heat where it took third place) in four different towns in Ontario. The owner posted an "aftermath" video: Drayton aftermath.

Good thing you told us what that is. I'd have had trouble recognizing it!

Now that's very impressive! The full-sizers should have trashed it, but if it's anything like the Cavalier I saw run in a full-size meet about a decade ago, it was just so light and maneuverable it just danced around the land yachts (right up until it took a Boxcar Imperial in the passenger door...).
