Any of you watch the TV show Young Sheldon last night, not that I'm the biggest fan of Big Bang Theory, but I thought I noticed a brief shot of some old Matchbox on a shelf in one of the commercials a few weeks back for Young Sheldon, anyway I watched the debut of the show last night and noticed right at the beginning when the boy is playing with his trains tons of old diecast on his train layout.

Here is a link to a YT video where it shows the layout about 28 seconds in, but this unfortunately is a much quicker view of it than the actual show presented. There were actually some regular wheel or transitional superfast there but not sure if this brief clip shows them.

the Lionel train is a Pennsylvania 6-8-6 Turbine locomotive
Looked like a more modern one than what Lionel had in the 1950s

Nothing good ever happens after midnight.
Breaking it down now...in the first shot you see the Police Patrol Range Rover behind the train. At 00:53 I see a Fiat 1500 in blue, a Matchbox Thunderbird and Jaguar, what looks like a Twinmill missing an engine, some kind of Corvette, and a Tootsietoy petrol tanker.

What caught my eye was the playworn condition, plenty of older diecast...older than I would think Sheldon to actually be playing with (his father's cars?). (Sheldon is about mid-30s today, his ten year old self would be about 20 years ago...1997ish. Those old cars were already ancient by then.)

The TV story line for Young Sheldon is set for 1989. I was thinking they would have been his Father's old toys as well, but they could be 2nd garage sale finds as well.

Thanks for the video link! It has a lot more layout shots of the cars than the promos or actual episode had.

While I have occasionally watched the Big Bang Theory at our daughter's home I am not overly familiar with the story line - I suppose it could be possible the old train set and little cars could have been from the grandpa. Also know a lot of programs don't make date connections for things like this and may have simply decided they wanted a train layout and bought a bunch of cars at a flea market or garage sale to use as part of the program. Just my :02:

Titus

A short lived series about a car mechanic / stand up comic.

In one episode his girlfriend threatened to tell everyone about his redline Hot Wheel collection he kept hidden in a closet.

Never saw the cars.

That's most likely. They wanted playworn, iconic examples of recognizable toy cars....would be my best guess...without any real consideration of what was actually made when.

And if the story is dated to 1989, then Sheldon Cooper *now* is right at 38 years old, which seems a tad further along than I had thought.

Now that I can get a better look...yep, a lot of old classic regular wheel Matchbox with a couple of slightly newer Superfast, and a smattering of Jam Pac Tootsietoys....looks like someone bought a case lot that had been sitting in an attic since about 1975ish. I see at least one model, don't know my Mbx well, I think its a Fiat, but it has been painted blue. I also see two larger scale plastic cars in the opening shot as the train rounds the corner that are not in the later shot as the train makes the straightaway. Not sure what they are (Renwal?), I don't recognize them, but I would guess late 1950s or early 1960s, at least as old as the oldest Mbx there. (I think the Ice Cream truck may be the oldest Mbx I recognize, but I can stand corrected)

Yeah I dont know that they ever established the actual casts age ranges in BBT, but this will be their eleven season. So it fits pretty well to the growing up, college years, starting out in the work field and 10 years of show time. Sheldon being the exception in education progression years, but still right for the social dynamics.

It would be cool to find out that the toys are actually from Parson's childhood (more likely a directors/producers.)

I think the larger plastic cars are from a Lionel car transporter. I have seen them in train sets and available as an individual rail car before. :toy:

Guess it's also possible that the cars are just a bunch they had in the prop department of the studio, I imagine they have all kinds of odd stuff stashed away in their warehouses.

Since the character is so into trains I'm hoping they show more of the layout in future episodes, makes me wonder if they will move things around like he actually played with the cars a bit, but there was one ad for the show sometime back where they showed a shelf or table in the background which to me appeared to have some 70's Matchbox on it, like the Fandango type cars, I thought anyways, but I had only ever seen that particular commercial once.

Saw it as well. Not sure I like the show that much but it was very cool seeing older die-cast in the train layout. Those are the cars I used in the 70's with my train layout.

I believe the red Fiat was part of a multicar gift set. My quick glance, I saw the #55 Cadillac Ambulance - thinking it appeared to be in pretty good shape.
