One beautiful and dependable ride. Family car, daily driver, stylish and classy along with the 442 and performance models...GM should have never ever pulled the plug on this one!!!![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This one I swapped for more detailed wheels and added some detail to make it more compatible to display with the AW and JL wagons... ![]() ![]() All the diecast companies did some fine replicas, but Greenlight did the most gorgeous convertible replicas. A daily driver ya could cruise all day with style and class!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Johnny pretty much had the performance models covered well and did some pretty nice other models also... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() M2 has a nice casting of the 442 also... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Even Hot Wheels had a few of the Olds Cutlass castings as well... ![]() These were extremely popular cars from about 1967 to about 1972. I can remember seeing them all over during those years. I owned a 1971 Olds Cutlass Rocket 350 that ran very well and was very dependable. My 72 was pretty much the same car but a black on black, on black vinyl hardtop... Yeah, GM made a huge mistake discontinuing these beautiful machines!!! |

I sure wish I knew also... There seemed to be many, many more Oldsmobiles on the roads than Buicks and they kept them... Seemed to me Olds sold more than Buick, but then again I'm not sure about the real reason... |

if i remember correctly. GM said the plants were due for total rebuilding and they did not think it would be worth it to invest the money to keep the line going. |

I wish Pontiac was still around as well. Firebirds are among my favorite American cars. A lot of younger car enthusiasts go to newer muscle cars or imports, as they're great, affordable options for the everyday enthusiast. It would be nice if the modern muscle car market had more options. I'm 24, and this hobby has helped me to learn and appreciate a number of cars. I lost track of just how many vehicles I learned about through this hobby. |

It could have been either Buick or Olds, but Buicks are well-known in China and very much an aspirational brand there (you know you made it if you can afford a Buick, sort of like Bentley in the US). Buick was saved by sales and presence in that market. I'll miss Olds and Saturn and Pontiac, but I can understand why GM eliminated them and Daewoo as brands - they had Chevrolet, Opel, Vauxhall, Holden, Daewoo, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Saturn and Cadillac to market as separate brands, each eating into each other's sales and requiring tooling costs to make the models separate. In the decade before that we lost Plymouth and Mercury, the Japanese brands started to eliminate their 'sibling models**' (for example the Corolla/Sprinter twins, only the Corolla exists now). More recently, FCA has almost entirely killed off Lancia, it sells one car only in Italy. Now the main two brands with overly full portfolios are VAG (Volkswagen, Skoda, SEAT, Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini) and PSA (Citroën, Peugeot, DS and now Opel and Vauxhall). All I can think of is the old horror movie poster: who will survive?! and what will be left of them!? ** Those sibling models were sold through different dealer streams under the same brand, almost like if Chevy and Pontiac dealers were branded as 'GM Chevrolet' and 'GM Pontiac' instead of as 'Chevrolet' and 'Pontiac'. That's why so many 70s-90s Japanese cars have twins like the Silvia and (whatever number)SX, Corolla/Sprinter, Civic/Domani/Integra sedan, etc. |
