I found this car in my Auto world store order (ordered a case of Auto Worlds) and I am wondering if this piece is desirable. ![]() I can't seem to find a lot about this specific piece on the internet. it says Ride The Storm Toy Fair '96 on the car itself Edited by 6A13TT, Nov 14 2017, 06:28 PM.

Nucleon, Toy Fair issue (1996 I believe), would have been right around the first or second year they were out. That is a remake of an old Topper casting. Value is catch as catch can. |

i know this migh come out as dumb but what do you mean by "Value is catch as catch can"? I'm mostly asking about the value as i am thinking of opening it but i don't want to upset some people if this model is pretty desirable carded. Never mind i opened it anyway because I couldn't find anything about its value. It was a freebee anyway, Edited by 6A13TT, Nov 15 2017, 03:42 AM.

Catch as catch can means whatever someone will pay. The Nucleon isn't particularly sought, meaning nobody that collects JL (even Toppers) really cares. The only value it has is as a Toy Fair car. If it brought $5, carded, I would consider that generous. I've seen the regular, Playing Mantis mainline editions still carded on nice cards, sit on the table at the flea for a buck go unsold. It was a nice gesture from the company, but that model isn't particularly valuable. That is what "catch as catch can" means. |

Welcome to the Garage 6A13TT! Definitely not one of the better ones from JL - would have been interesting to see what they did with this in their later years as their castings improved!

I doubt that it's even good enough for a die cast customizer. |

The proportions are all out of wack though, Seems like they were trying to make quick money off of a Stephen King movie licence. |

By today's standards, I agree. At the time it came out (late 1990s) it was the best example out there at $3 and under. The only better retailed at $5, and it was by Ertl and it was not that easy to find. Similar can be said of the "Elvira" square 'bird, at the time the only others were long gone vintage (Matchbox, Hubley) or none at all. It was a few more years before JL released a more accurate stock version, and still more years before Hot Wheels got around to doing theirs. So at the time, the Christine and the Elvira T-bird were the best available in the price range, Now that almost 20 years have passed, things have improved and there are better selections available. |

That's around the time they released the Tom Daniel cars. SOOOOO disappointed with those as well. I wish someone would revisit those along with more of his kit designs. Vandal! |

Agreed there too, but again they were the best available at the time. Gotta figure, even the Tom Daniel designs were leaps and bounds above anything else out there (in the states, anyway) from HW and Mbx at the time. Of course, the retail price reflected that. And some of the models done have not been covered before or since. The T'rancula had been done before, but detail/quality was certainly no worse than the previous examples. Something like the Cherry Bomb was tough to translate to scale anyway...poor choice on management's part I would say. But the Tijuana Taxi, Root Beer Truck, Garbage Truck and especially the Draggin' Dragon were inspired choices and for the level of detail were actually pretty well done...the downside being the wheel choices, which was true across the line at the time. Could they all stand another go 'round with better detailing? I would say yes, but would guys buy? That's where things get sticky, and my guess is they probably wouldn't move all that well. Guys that grew up with Daniel's designs would still appreciate them, but the younger guys would most likely turn up their noses. Automotive art is not as well received these days, and that's just a fact of life. |

Gee Wes...are you saying we are getting older I was thrilled when the Tom Daniels models were released by JL. I was never great at assembling the plastic kits so it was neat for me to be able to finally have these customs in my collection. JL was doing some great things in those days and offering us a lot of models that no one else had ever done in small scale. Would it be nice to see updated versions - probably - but as you noted I don't think they would sell that well in this day and age.

Oh I was thrilled too, enough to pick up every series / variants I saw, including the "Collector Series" in the proper colors...all of which are in a tub out in the shed right now with no place to put them. I do have the pink variant of the Draggin' Dragon in one of my displays. |
