Squad 1... She's getting old!![]() OK, not that old but after many years of faithful service Squad 1 is about to be moved to reserve status. ![]() Squad 1 is being replaced with a new ambulance being built by Leader Ambulance on a Ford F550 chassis. The new rig will be called Medic Rescue 1. (Squad 1 will be placed into deep reserve as either Rescue Medic 2, or may become an MCI or Rehab unit) I thought you guys might be interested in seeing the "ambulance building process" so here are some pics of the box being built several months ago and placed onto the rolling chassis - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thanks for the update on Squad 1's replacement and the new Medic Rescue 1. Also neat to see some of the building process. Many years ago - like back in the '80's when the squad I was with was getting a new rig Wheeled Coach sent a representative who did a slide (remember those?) on how their units were built.

A few weeks ago I went down to LA for the mid point inspection of the build and snapped a few pics.![]() ![]() ![]() While there have been a few mis-steps along the way, Medic Rescue 1 is still coming together nicely. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() and of course the custom seats in the back of the box are a nice touch - ![]() ![]() She's got some additional items being worked on and changed but should be delivered within the next few weeks. The it's striping, marking and outfitting time. |

Sammy, Thanks for the insight. The new MR-1 looks pretty sweet, can't wait to see her with decals and equipment. I love the interior seats with the "SLO City Fire" on them! Kind of interesting to see the AMR rigs being made and marked up by Leader, most of the AMR units in CT are AEV's (assumed the whole company used them) and a local company Sign Pro does the decals. |

Thanks for posting Sammy. I was at Horton three years ago. The ambulance start-to-finish building process is amazing. Please post again with graphics ! |

Thank you for sharing Sammy! It it great to see that things have returned to where you can start sharing great pots again! I almost made the mistake of using a phrase about your availability of time but I didn't want to jinx you. You have more than earned a break!

And this morning I was lamenting the lack of ambulances in the known upcoming Matchbox mainline....and hoping for another E350...now I want Mbx to do one on the F550 chassis! Maybe yours will be the model for the model.....

We've missed you, too! Notice there haven't been many fun participation threads in this bay since you got busy last year! We were waiting for the return of our "Jedi" master.... |

So, as an update... The Leader factory is done with Medic Rescue 1. We will be sending down our mechanics to pick it up this week! In the meantime, I need to figure out how to make a custom MB model or color comp version out of these - ![]() Took apart a pair of them to see if it might be do-able - ![]() Looks like it may work but will unfortunately require some chassis mods to work, which may make it difficult to make enough for a Color Comp run. - ![]() unless of course I find a donor model with the correct length wheel base. If not, I may look towards a model with a standard cab. |

Good luck with the custom project Sammy - would be exciting to see it as a Color Comp issue.

Thanks Pastor John, I'm finding some difficulties coming up with a chassis that will fit this cab and the box together. Having to modify or "splice" some together would be pretty labor intensive, especially to come up with enough for a color comp run. I may end up picking a different casting like the old Chevy ambulance with the pickup truck cab. Like this maybe - ![]() |

Get Jim Reid to teach you how to splice those chassis pieces together....he's an expert! |

Well, I've been searching high and low for an appropriate chassis for a custom Medic Rescue 1. By lining up the box off of the old MB Ford Ambulance Squad 1 with various models I think I've finally found the right cab and chassis. The Ford KME Mini-pumper -![]() Luckily I had a spare in reserve to replace the one I am going to use - ![]() It would have been tough to take this thing apart if didn't have an intact one to keep in my collection, but since I had that covered - ![]() Interestingly enough, I had to drill out three location on the casting. The two post that are typical of most models, along with another small spot in the center of the model which can be seen in the photo of the chrome chassis shown above. Moving along... I had to remove the rear white post from inside the box from the ambulance in order to allow it to sit properly onto the mini-pumpers chassis - ![]() Once that was removed it allowed the box to rest squarely on the chassis - ![]() It looks like I will have to figure out a way to fill in a few gaps here and there, like above the rear bumper - ![]() |

That's awesome so far, Sammy! Now I wanna decide if I can spare my "spare" KME model as well....pretty sure I have an extra of the SLO E350 too, somewhere... Oh, and where'd you get that fine-scale snipper? I end up sawing (by hand, with similarly tiny sawblades) parts off like that. Edited by b2young, Feb 19 2018, 01:12 PM.

Well, time to do some precision "custom" metal work, so first thing is getting together the right equipment - ![]() just kidding ![]() Now let's get that cab off! ![]() Here's the first attempt... I left the silver panel attached to the back of the cab in hopes it would help cover some of the gap at the top of the box -

Unfortunately, keeping the silver panel attached to the back of the cab wouldn't allow for the cab to sit down onto the chassis - ![]() so, back to the dremel. |
