As soon as I saw the Best of The World/Best Of Matchbox 2017 BMW M5 police livery, I knew I was going to do this....and since in the ensuing month or so nobody else has done it, here goes. A photographic comparison of the 2017 BotW/BoM BMW M5 to it's 2011 Lesney Edition counterpart, the fabulous BMW X5:![]() by Jefferson Young on Flickr ![]() by Jefferson Young on Flickr [Rather than retake the photos, allow me to apologize for the dust on the X5...it was displayed on my headboard for several years out of the package...] One of the first things to notice is that the M5 has 5 "sides" of tampo/deco, while the "double diecast" X5 only got 4 passes. ![]() by Jefferson Young on Flickr ![]() by Jefferson Young on Flickr ![]() by Jefferson Young on Flickr ![]() by Jefferson Young, on Flickr Of course, I think it's freakin' awesome that these two were released in the same "MBX DISTRICT POLICE" quasi-GB livery. They make an awesome pair; remarkably, the "double-diecast" of the LE doesn't weigh all that much more than the BoTW (59g vs 53g). And I think there's wear and tear on the X5's paint from all the fondling I did of it in those early days of DLM Freedom....but there are also indications that the art of graphics application has improved in the ensuing 6 years between releases. Look at those headlights and taillights on the M5! No comment on the overall accuracy of either model...I'm (remember) NOT a "car guy"....but I know what I like. These two stalwarts of the long line of great Matchbox Law Enforcement vehicles just continue the finest tradition of small-scale policing in modern day diecast. Hope you enjoyed! |

Sadly, the X5 was from a time before I started collecting, so it wasn't a model that I was looking out for. But ever since my attention was brought to it by a member here, it has been on my holy grails list (though I'm not biting on the $65 one that's on Ebay right now). Fitting that Matchbox would do this pair, and hopefully we'll see some other vehicles sport this livery down the road. Thanks for the side-by side comparison! |

Also sadly, I had three of the Austin "Panda" Lesney Edition, and 3 of the Highway Patrol black and white Blazer, but not of the X5 (or I'd gladly offer the extra to you for much better than ebay....I have no idea why I had 3 of the others...but there you go...guess I didn't know which one I'd like better? And I guessed wrong...) |

Just googled the Austin and that's on my want list now! I'm pretty much smitten by all of the Emergency vehicles from the Lesney line - I can distinctly remember buying mainlines from that time period but can't recall if I saw the Lesney models. Think I would've balked at the price then due to my age, but I'm in no rush to try and add them to my collection nowadays.

Thank you for the comparion pictures of the Bimmer police vehicles. Not sure why but I don't have the X5 in my collection - seems strange that I don't but guessing one I never came across and for some reason didn't grab one from an on-line dealer in the day. Likewise never found any of the Austin Panda Police Vans or the Highway Patrol Blazers(if you are willing to sell/trade one of the extra's I would be interested Blair).

Neat comparison Blair, first photo I noticed how good the hood tampo looked and the lack of it on the LEd. Like a number of the LEd, and NSF models of years past, of those which I would have liked if I had seen, this SUV is one I missed out on too. |

Since those are numbered 8 and 9 maybe we could get 1 - 7. |

As long as we don't have to wait another 6 years to get to each additional number....
