My First Car Mystery

OK, so it's not my first car, and it's not even my first diecast mystery, but still this seems like a good puzzle to solve for anyone that would like to try!

This just came in from a seller in China:

I recognized the casting right off...the Harry Potter Anglia 105E, although it was never sold under that specific name. Matty first used this casting for a movie tie in game called Spider Swarm, shortly after it got a couple rounds in the mainline Hot Wheels, and officially that is that. (Correction, there is an Easter issue and one more that is escaping my mind...still this casting didn't get much use)

However, nowhere on the model does it say "Hot Wheels."

Posted Image

I am hard pressed to think of another single model ever issued in the Hot Wheels mainline to *not* have the Hot Wheels name on it, somewhere. I suppose technically the Harry Potter issue is not really a Hot Wheel, although the package did have the Hot Wheels logo on it as I recall. Even the ex-Corgis had Hot Wheels bases when they were issued in the mainline and in playsets.

Posted Image

Just a little closer, so you can see the base on both models is the same.

Posted Image

And in case there is any doubt, the base is the same on the mainline issues as well.

Posted Image

So, the thought plickens...here we have both mainlines, the Harry Potter playset, another long time mystery that could be a rit dye custom (or not), and the new kid on the block.

So, My First Car, is it Hot Wheels, or not? If not, what is it? If so, where did it come from?

Dunno, but congrats on a nice collection. Only ever saw the blue one before this. If I had to answer, I'd say, "if it doesn't say Hot Wheels, then technically, its not one." I have the blue copy.

Cool, that one was the hardest for me to "find," the other two (bronze and the new one) were happy accidents, nothing I was deliberately looking for.

It still boggles my mind that Mattel or any other manufacturer didn't jump on the Harry Potter bandwagon with some licensed diecast. :o

i have noticed a few differences between the 4 mainlines and the red one.

the mainlines have what looks to be a latch release just below the hood line.the red does not.

the red and blue interiors have trays on the top of the dashboards.the others dont.

also the interiors of the red and blue are a different color from the other 3.

They're there, it's just hard to see with the yellow plastic.

As for the tooling difference (which I think is a badge on the real car), it may be a case like the Pontiac Banshee where the raised portion was eliminated due to wear on the molds.

As for the red example, I've never seen one. I like it though! I still need the Harry Potter version. I passed on the playset at the time because I heard cable companies were going to be distributing the Hot Wheels issue and I figured I'd get that. If that happened, Comcast didn't participate (or at least my local office didn't). Can anyone verify these were ever given away by cable companies?

Tomica has since done a Limited Vintage model:

That Tomica is quite detailed. Is it supposed to be tied to Harry Potter, or just a regular car?

Thank you for making me look closer....seems the HP and the new red one both have the same crack on the base at the front rivit...the mainlines do not have that...

I am thinking, that with the same interior color and same crack on the base at the rivit, that likely the red was an early issue. I have no way to confirm that, but all else considered I'm thinking it is earlier, not later. The ho5 (lambo) wheels were certainly available, and are clearly HW, I'm just wondering how this one was released or if it even was released (pre-pro).

Never seen this one before. Very odd.

Here is the Easter variation from this casting I have. This one has a 'Made in Thailand' base.

I wrote to the seller:

"Greetings,

I received the model just fine, and I am happy with it. I want to ask if you have any information about where it comes from, how it was released to market? This is not a common model in any paint variation, and this paint variation I am not familiar with. Can you tell me anything about this model, please?

Thank you,

Wes"

His reply:

"Hi
I dont have any infomation about this model
I am sure this is a specil model
Because it comes from employees at MATTEL's Chinese factory
Kind regards
Zhang"

Best guess until shown otherwise, this is likely a lunchbox special... ;)
