The local TRU manager told me they will be closing a lot of slow stores. You never know!

I heard it was the whole company now--all 700 US stores, and as soon as next week by one report. I got a lot of good parts of my collection at this city's store (some when it was in an old location near the mall). It would be too bad to see it go...for the selection of Green Light and JL alone, and of course if you like 'street cars from Europe' the Majorettes... this store is where I find many of my GL police cars, and I've found all of my GL ambulances at TRU in one city or another. Better than Walmart for everything except Matchbox, though TRU's selection of Mbx has been better than some chains, carrying the Best of Matchbox lines AND the Globe Travelers series.

We still have two outlets of an Idaho toy store chain here, but they're more into the "educational" toys and Bruder and big pressed steel dump trucks and that kind of stuff for "automotive" toys. Barely even a handful of Hot Wheels, and I've seen maybe two or three individual matchbox cards at either of the stores. No other diecast at all outside the Kinsmart pullback cars carousel.

A grim day for collectors who like finding 'fresh' real 1:64 scale cars and trucks in their local stores...(oh, and it was just over a mile from my house, and a nice walk to and from in the right conditions.)

The Walmarts I frequent all have the tags for this series on the peg, but no models so far. They have shown up in other areas of Canada, so I'm still holding out a bit of hope that I'll find these.

For sure, if Toys R Us were to close it would be unfortunate - but the Canadian TRUs are really devoid of anything good. My local TRU went from having half of their diecast aisle pegged full of Matchbox back in 2008-2009 to dropping the whole brand altogether in around 2014. Premium diecast barely exist (except during the Christmas season), and as a result I relied on the American stores for my fix of Matchbox and Greenlight. Looks like I'll have to resort to online dealers more and more...

Ironic, no? One of the purported reasons for TRU's insolvency is that "people don't buy stuff at brick-and-mortar stores any more", so bankruptcy sends those who DO still shop at retail outlets online as their only hope of finding the models they want.

Saw most of this Matchbox series at the Dickinson, ND Wal-Mart. I don't live close to a TRU store (closest five hours away) but I know my youngest granddaughter loves to go to the one in Fargo when her parents visit there (only an hour or so drive for them from Grand Forks). :D It will be sad to see them gone - an iconic toy store. I did not grow up in an area where they existed - my first time in a TRU was in the early '80's when we lived in St. Louis.

I do agree with the fact that people are going online more and more for the products that they want. Everything from electronics to groceries, it seems; this includes myself. And while most of the toy section of a store can be accessed online (say, Lego), in my opinion diecast is the exception. Buying diecast online from a big-box store doesn't work because you really don't know what you get. Unfortunate, but that's the sad reality of today's world.

(Sorry for the tangent)
