Bluebird Wagon Custom

I was getting a lot of inspiration from all the Datsun 510 customs floating around Instagram, and wanted to make my own. Sadly the only 510 wagon I've ever found in the wild was a yellow racing livery one, purely by chance, long before I was in on the JDM craze and before I knew how badly these cars were scalped.

I haven't found any since and I certainly won't be getting the boulevard wagon any time soon, so a friend over in Serbia sent me this blue JNC wagon. I knew from the beginning it was going to get customised - I wanted a nice, premium looking Datsun to sit alongside Japan Historics and the Cargo Carriers Hakosuka wagon, so here comes my own take on the Datsun Bluebird. Bluebirds are a sign of spring, after all!

The bluebird as it arrived to me from Serbia. I love the blue colour, not the deco, and certainly not the red wheels. First came a wheel swap and a lowering!

Those whitewalls were a bit of an avant-garde choice I think, given nearly every custom I've seen sports low-profile real riders on deep dish spokes. I think since the 510 is a nice 60s-70s wagon, I can get away with it.

It was at this point I felt a little bit of hesitation in removing that blue paint - but I found some inspiration online for a metallic jade colour and had to go for it.

Here he is sporting his new colour. Looking good so far!

Some front detailing and the colour starts to pop. I love the dual colour headlamps and hadn't seen them very often in other customs.

Finally I made this roof rack using paperclips and dowel. These roof racks are pretty simple to make and give the car loads of character.

Lacquer over the final product....

And here's the final product after being resealed and license plated. I love how it came out, what do you think?

Thanks for checking out my photos! Hopefully there are more customs to come.

very VERY nicely done! I love the white wall approach on this, that's something I would not have thought would look really good, but it turned out amazing. Everything that you did turned out amazing, great job

Thank you! The wheels were definitely spur of the moment. It's not really possible to have piles of real riders gleaned from discarded hot wheels here so I just grabbed the closest thing I thought would work. It turned out much better than I expected!

Thanks. ... I've been on a crazy 80s Japanese binge lately and this wagon is just what I need to satisfy those cravings  another shot from today:

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
It's awesome, and I love the roof rack - nice touch! I like the jade, and it matches the Skyline I think (not entirely sure - have yet to see that one in person...and probably never will).

Great work on the Bluebird; it looks fantastic! I really like the roof rack as well, that might be something I'll need to experiment with for some of my cars. Great choices on everything, since they fit the car really well. Thanks for sharing your work!

I hope you do find it! I've got my set pre-ordered so I'll be sure to put these side by side when it arrives)
