Today's car of the day comes from jedimario's collection, and is Tomica's 2013 Toyota Crown Athlete.

Wikipedia

The Toyota Crown is an automobile which has been produced by Toyota in Japan since 1955. It is currently a line of mid/full-size luxury sedans primarily aimed at the Japanese market and sold in other select Asian markets. Introduced in 1955, it has served as the mainstream sedan from Toyota in the Japanese market throughout its existence and holds the distinction of being the longest running passenger-car nameplate affixed to any Toyota model, along with being the first Toyota vehicle to be exported to the United States in 1958. The fourteenth generation Crown was launched in December 2012 with new styling. The Crown Athlete series takes the luxurious aspect of the Royal series but has more aggressive styling and sporty features. The Crown Athlete has been tested to do 0-100 km/h in under 6 seconds.

This week's COTD cars are courtesy of jedimario. Tomica replicated the very pink / fuchsia color that Toyota actually used to show off the new 2013 Crown Athlete. The color did apparently make it to production, titled "ReBorn Pink" as the color option for the real car.

The Toyota Crown is like a Japanese Lincoln Town Car: a big, conservative sedan meant for shuttling businessmen between the airport and the board room. Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda is pushing his company to build exciting cars, but that seems like an impossible task when it comes to the Crown. Unless it is painted pink. No one was expecting the pink hue when the 2013 Crown was unveiled to the media in Japan. Toyoda said the color choice was in keeping with the mission to make Toyota’s cars more exciting. He said the pink paint was meant to change the Crown’s conservative image, and attract more female buyers. Pink may not be an option when the production Crown hits Japanese showrooms this year, but Toyoda is personally pushing for it. Along with the new color, Toyoda said drivability and performance were emphasized during the Crown’s redesign. The mesh grille on the "Athlete Series" Crown is also a major statement considering what the previous 13 generations looked like.

This one definitely came off as a Lexus by the grille on there. I like the color on this one

The color was pretty tough to really capture...this one is best experienced in-hand.

Big sedans generally just don't do it for me. Big PINK sedans even less so. To me, the Javelin-esque front fenders look out of place on an otherwise formal sedan. I realize they were going for a sportier look, but Cadillac managed to make the Seville/STS from the early 2000's look sporty and luxurious at the same time without resorting to that sort of thing... and without painting it PINK, for heaven's sake!

Mario: Thanks for providing the Tomicas this week. That's a brand I have no experience with since I tend to limit myself to the more readily available brands. I look forward to seeing what's to come over the next few days.
