Today's car of the day is Matchbox's 1991 Audi Avus quattro Concept.

Wikipedia

The Audi Avus quattro was a concept supercar made by the German car manufacturer Audi. It was first introduced at the 1991 Tokyo Motor Show. The Avus quattro had an aluminum space frame, which made it a lightweight and safe automobile. This second showing of the new aluminum architecture (after the quattro Spyder a month before) paved the way for the mass-produced aluminum A8 in 1994. The Avus quattro is now on display at Audi's museum mobile in Ingolstadt, Germany.

In 1995, a Tyco-owned Matchbox produced this casting of a 1991 Audi concept car. The debut Matchbox version was in a reflective chrome finish, replicating the original show car. Of note, Hot Wheels also cast the Avus show car, but their casting was started in 1990.

Wikipedia

The Avus quattro's engine was supposed to be a 6.0 L 60-valve 12-cylinder engine producing 502 hp. The exact car shown at the Tokyo Motor Show, however, had a dummy made of carefully painted wood and plastic for an engine because at the time, such a powertrain was still in development; Audi-made W12 engines were not available to buyers until 2001, on the Audi A8 6.0 W12 quattro in 2001.

I come across this one a lot at flea markets. I feel like if this one was a hard to come by casting, I'd have a lot more appreciation for it

This is a nice and bright little car. Over the course of collecting I had several variations on this one - not one of my more favorite models from MB but that was back in the days when everything came home with me.

From a concept view it is very clever, but from a collector view it never has been very popular. Some supercars sell, some don't...

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
Maybe the real car looks better in person (I'll never see it, so I'll never know), but from the pics I've seen of the Avus quattro it doesn't have a single attractive angle. Not a car I go out of my way for...

I have the Hot Wheels version of this one, but not the Matchbox. I agree with Swifty, I'm not going out hunting for one either. As he says, it's just not too attractive.

I haven't a single one of this casting, but I wouldn't mind finding a chrome one at a swap meet. Never seen one yet. :o
