Today's car of the day is Matchbox's 2003 Nissan 350Z.

Wikipedia

The Nissan 350Z (known as Nissan Fairlady Z in Japan) is a two-door, two-seater sports car that was manufactured by Nissan Motors from 2002 to 2009 and marks the fifth generation of Nissan's Z-car line. The 350Z entered production in late 2002 and was sold and marketed as a 2003 model. The first year there was only a coupe, as the roadster did not debut until the following year. Initially, the coupe came in Base, Enthusiast, Performance, Touring and Track versions, while the Roadster was limited to Enthusiast and Touring trim levels. The Track trim came with lightweight wheels and Brembo brakes, but its suspension tuning was the same as all other coupes. The Nissan 350Z has been succeeded by the 370Z since the 2009 model year.

Ten years ago, a 300ZX was COTD. Today, a 350Z. This version of Matchbox's 350Z was part of the 2006 New Superfast series. With how many toy makers made models of the 350Z / Fairlady Z, it is easy to dismiss them and overlook how nice many of the castings were. At least a dozen different manufacturers offered small scale models of this Z car.

Wikipedia

The 350Z is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, two-door, two-seat sports car designed by Diane Allen of Nissan Design America in San Diego, California in 2000. This program was inspired by the successful reaction to the 1998 240Z concept model. The vehicle has the long-hood short-deck design common to the Z-Car family. Currently, external design highlights include: sloping fastback style arched roof line, unique brushed aluminum door handles, high waistline, and bulging fenders that are pushed out to the corners of the vehicle. Interior design has brushed aluminum accents. The main gauge pod is mounted directly to the steering column allowing their movement to coincide with steering wheel adjustments. Additional gauges are mounted in a center triple gauge cluster (similar to the 240Z/260Z/280Z). Touring models are equipped with the Bose sound system get a six CD changer and 8-inch Bose sub mounted behind the driver's seat. The 350Z's interior does not have a conventional glove box, but has storage compartments located behind and between the two seats.

Great Matchbox. Basic, good looking car with no extra graphics.

Matchbox captured the proportions of the real car better than everyone else. A little more detailed headlights would have gone a long way to making this model exceptional.

Ever since I was a kid, and bought my first "New Superfast" at KB Toys when they first came out (Hummer H3 Concept), I couldn't stand those wheels, I think they look good on this for some reason.

I think Matchbox did quite well with this--even better than the Tomica Fairlady convertible.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
A very nice casting and paint. I don't see any where near as many 350z cars as I would expect for a car built for 7 years. Price? Performance?

 R3ally sharp looking Z car from Matchbox - for some reason I do not remember this New Superfast version - really not sure why as I was buying most of them...and that might be the key word right there - most of them - guessing I didn't grab this one.

Nice little Z-Car. I'll go along with the other guys - If I saw this car on the pegs today, I'd get one.

A car that is modelwise not for my collection but I still have kept one that I came across in a thrift store bag. Almost any car with that era MBX styling is just so perfect

The real 350Z was so popular around here in California, that I very much consider it to be a "daily driver" / "commuter queen" / "everyday car," so the models of it are very much appreciated in my own collection.

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
Is it me, or has the 370Z been less popular in small scale than the 350Z? Come to think of it, I don't see many 370Zs cruising around in the real world either.

True on both accounts. The 370 was still seen often enough here to not be considered exotic, but the 350 was way more common on the roads here.

Model wise, here is what I recall being out there (likely not a comprehensive list)

370Z/Fairlady models:
Dickie
Hot Wheels
Maisto
Playmind
Tomica

350Z/Fairlady models (not including models of the race car version)
Aoshima
Autoart
Dickie
Hot Wheels (2 different castings)
Jada
Johnny Lightning
Malibu International
Matchbox
Muscle Machines
Norev
Racing Champions/Ertl (2 different castings)
Realtoy
Real-X
Summer / Kai Jal
Tamiya
Tomica
Trend Syndicate
Welly
YatMing Road Signature 1/72

370Z in 1/18:
GT Spirit (no opening parts)

350Z in 1/18:
Autoart
Auto World
Hot Wheels
Maisto
Racing Champions / Ertl
YatMing Road Signature
