Today's car of the day is Matchbox's 2000 GMC Terradyne Concept.

Wikipedia

The GMC Terradyne was a concept truck made by GMC in 2000, designed for heavy industrial use. It was first unveiled to the public at the 2000 North American International Auto Show. One of its notable features was an onboard 5000 watt generator, which was said to put out enough power to operate an entire house. The truck was made from durable metals like stainless steel, so that the cab could be washed out with a hose. All four doors were designed to slide backwards and forward (much like minivan doors) rather than to swing outwards. It also features an extended cab pushed forward to create more room for passengers, and a truck bed that can be expanded from six feet to eight by means of an extending tailgate.

The Terradyne was one of many GM Concept vehicles of the time replicated in small scale by Matchbox.

Terradyne, the 2000 concept vehicle from GMC, takes the traditional full-size pickup into a new realm of capabilities. The truck's name derives from ''terra,'' Latin for ''of the earth,'' and the Greek ''dyne,'' meaning ''strength and power.'' Terradyne's powerful 6.6-liter V8 intercooled turbo-diesel, Duramax 6600, sets new standards for diesel power, performance, durability and quiet operation. The Allison 1000 Series 5-speed automatic transmission features normal and tow/haul modes of operation, and adds engine-grade braking and power take-off capabilities. With Terradyne, GMC also introduces QuadraSteer, a four-wheel Steering system. Traditional extended cab doors open away from each other, and a vehicle parked close in the next space can prevent them from opening very far. This creates difficulty for the pickup's occupants in entering, exiting and loading cargo. Terradyne's four innovative doors are powered to glide forward and back instead of swinging out, providing easy access to the cab.

While I think it is neat to see Matchbox and others offer concept vehicles this one just never did anything for me. ;)

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
I'm glad Matchbox got away from doing concepts. It's a decent replica, and the wheels, while inaccurate, suit it well. It just doesn't do anything for me.

Nothing good ever happens after midnight.
I think Maisto did this one, they were heavy into the GM concepts as well. I did like the Chevy BelAir convertible they put out around 2004.

Remember the collector complaints over the use of concept castings in the new Superfast series? The GMC concept was five years old by the time of its Superfast release, and no one really had any draw to the real thing or the model anymore.

And yes, Maisto also cast the Terradyne among many other GM concept vehicles of the time.

I kinda like it but then I like seeing concept vehicles in scale. That said, she sure isn't pretty - ugly in a sort of industrial way. Why is it that pickup manufacturers seem to think that their product has to be ugly? I can't think of a single pickup currently available in the showrooms today that isn't ugly! At least GMC got in on that trend on the ground floor. The last good looking pickup that I can recall was the Chevy/GMC series that debuted in 1988.
