Just saw this on eBay, had to laugh.

Share your example of manufacturers trying to cash in on a themed vehicle but just not quite getting it right, or just not having the licensing rights!

That Fast One is ridiculous! The General Lee is probably the most imitated. I've got the Yatming Aspen, Duster and Monaco "Dixie" cars.

I seen & may have that MFP from when JL was owned by Tomy then
Heck they even put out a futuristic car that even tho it had JL on the package the bottom of car said Ertl!
Reason for that is Tomy owns the Ertl name now

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
Generic Lees are always popular. Buby used a Mustang II hatchback to replicate the General!

Hot Wheels also did a black van with a red stripe as part of the "Dynamite Crossing" playset that used the old Dodge 'Super Van' casting. And also offered with the Dixie Challenger was a white Sheriff Patrol meant to be Rosco's Monaco cruiser. And of course the Second Wind certainly resembles the powerful Mach 5, does it not?

Ertl was the master of this during the '80s. Rosco got to drive a Pontiac Bonneville thanks to reusing the police car casting from Smokey And The Bandit. Ertl even issued NASCAR stockers meant to replicate current car into the '90s with their 1983 Thunderbird. Even some that weren't Fords (Michael Waltrip's Pontiac comes to mind).

Jada did a Transformers Bumblebee lookalike using a later second generation Camaro (with wrap-around rear window) as opposed to a 1974.

Johnny Lightning offered the 1955 Lincoln Futura because at the time it was presumed to be impossible to get the 1966 Batmobile license.

There are so many examples of this. Trying to be close without being too close to infringe on copyrights.

thats what the Batmobile IS
A Lincoln Futura concept car
Barris paid $1 for it & the plans to build others
not bad for when he got $4.2 million for the $1 car

Oh also on Tomy's JL line in the 2000s there was a purple & green car that strongly resembled the cars that the Joker's henchmen used in the 1989 movie

No, it's what the Batmobile was before Barris turned a once beautiful concept into that horribly tacky monstrosity (if I had the money, I'd buy it and restore it back to the stock Futura). Hence why JL did the Futura casting. Because at the time there was no way to obtain the licensing for the 1966 Batmobile. That's the point of this thread: 'close but no cigar'. I assure you, they didn't make it because there's high demand for the Lincoln Futura (a car that has only two 'real' colors - white & red, both of which JL offered) in small scale. But there were customizers who were quite happy to turn these into Batmobiles...

did you know that after George turned it into the Batmobile he took it out for a test drive & the LAPD I assume impounded the car!

I believe it was in a movie right before it got changed into the Batmobile

because of the custom job George did Every single Batmobile has had a jet turbine in it B)

I likes the Futura tho
it is a neat car

Nothing good ever happens after midnight.
I think the Baja Breaker Hot Wheels with the Real Riders was painted to look like the A Team van.

Here's another one-the HW '34 Ford painted to look like the ZZ Top Eliminator!
